If I could, I would. The children are mostly back to school now, so there is a sustained level of chaos that surges through the day like the smell of exhaust fumes. The days grow shorter, so that early activities happen as the sun is just coming up and my body strongly suggests to me that something is wrong. Meals are made and disappear. There's not time, it seems, for everything to happen at a natural pace. If I could, I would take off my shoes and lay down in the shade in a hammock and rock my cares away.

There's a story here. I'm just not entirely certain of what it could be.

The new status symbol is to not be connected: to not have a cell held up to some part of your head, to not have a blackberry, or a something-Pod, or wi-fi, or a high-speed connection; to not have the need to jack in to jack off; to exist in real time, to see and react to people you know face to face, rather than virtually. The new status symbol is to actually be a real person and not a personna, to be a part of world around you, to take it as it comes. The new status symbol is to be real.

There is still time to squeeze out the last few hours of Summer; to sit on a dock and watch the water and to have a cool drink as the sun goes down.

Is she looking out, or is she looking in? Are you looking in, or are you looking out? Where are you, and where is she? Would you trade places if you could?

She always wanted to feel beautiful. She always wanted other people to think of her as elegant and carefree; to be the kind of person who could drag a mink coat behind her across the floor and not think anything of it. She wanted to be glamorous, like a movie star, to have many lovers and to not pay any mind to where the money went. If she wanted it, she bought it. After the accident, however, she began to change. It was maybe enough just to be alive, even thought each day she awoke to pain. Everyone said that she was lucky, and she thought that she probably was. But, somewhere inside of her, she missed that carefree person who maybe was a little reckless, but who made people turn their heads as she went by. She always wanted to feel beautiful.

He said: "Are you with me? Are you here? Are you really focused on being here; on your being's being here with me? Are you with me here now, in this present moment? Not somewhere in the future; not somewhere in the past, but here, now, at this instant in time. Be here with me, now."

She could be stubborn. Oh, he knew how stubborn she could be when she wanted to. She could insist that black was white and night was day when she had a mind to. There wasn't any use at all in trying to talk some sense into her. She would just dig in deeper. She was in one of those moods now. The best thing that he could do was just nod his head and leave the room. That way, nothing would get out of any and nothing would be said that would be regretted later. So, that's what he did: nodded his head and left the room, leaving her momentarily fuming.

A song lyric kept going through his mind: "Sometimes you gotta do what Elvis did and shoot the damn thing out". He couldn't keep it out of his brain. What was maddening was that he couldn't remember where he had heard the song that the line was from, or, in fact, what the song name was. He though that if he could just hear it one time, then the snippet would leave his brain and he could move on. There would be "closure" as they say. But, instead, he was being tortured by the song. Every time he turned the television on that line kept cycling in his head. "Sometimes you gotta do what Elvis did..." It was making him crazy. So, what he did was this: since he didn't have a gun, he threw the f**king TV out; just put it out on the curb for the garbage men to take away. After he did that, he felt much better. He listened to the radio instead, hoping to hear that song. But he never did. As the first week passed, he felt more like himself. He really wasn’t sorry he got rid of the TV. At least not very sorry. There wasn't anything much on anyway.

Tallulah Bankhead is buried not too far from this angel, in a cemetary on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She was, by all accounts, a woman of outrageous appetites. She is quoted as saying: "If I had to do it over again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner." And, my favorite: "My mother told me all about whiskey and men; but she never said anything about cocaine and women".
