What if we just gave it back to them. Said, "Sorry, it's a little broken, but here it is. We're giving it back and moving on." Going back to the planet that we came from or something. I don't know. It doesn't sound like such a terrible idea. Would they even want to take us up on it? What with all the Super Fund sites and all. It might be more trouble than it would be worth. Stumble It!

I attended a recent EPA training session on working with Tribal Governments and materials included a list of do's and don'ts. Among the don'ts are: don't ask to touch an Indian's hair, don't make the "How" sign when greeting an Indian, don't claim to have a great-great-grandmother who was a full-blooded Indian princess, don't assume it's OK to bring alcohol to a pow wow, don't refer to traditional regalia as "costumes," and don't talk about the sweat lodge you went to in Berkeley.
All, I am sure, very good advise. I would also include not asking to smoke the Peace Pipe.
It's also important to realize that Indians consider European colonization of America an invasion, and I have to recognize that as a representative of the U.S. Government, Tribes have no reason to trust me.
